What does Blackguard do when not touring? (aka the thread that won't die)

"Varg and the gang" have denounced all black metal followers for basically being the antithesis of what the early 90s black metal scene was about. Biggest propagator of this ideal: Fenriz of Darkthrone.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that pic, almost as much as this one:

(Note - Not that there is ANYTHING remotely funny about suicide, but just that this kid obviously does not understand a damn thing he hears in the lyrics of the music he listens to, assuming he listens to Nightwish)

But when you look at the history and what it meant to seeing what it has turned into it is funny and sad. Here you had guys burning churches and killing people in the name of evil and anti-christianity to some goofy nerds in high school dressing like it to be funny and cool. I wonder if Varg and the gang would have done all that they have done in the past knowing how it was all going to turn out.

The number of people killed and churches burned in the name of black metal dwarfs to the amount of black metal that was coming out at the time. Black metal was always about far more than about those things.

Sure, those kids likely have little clue over the emotions that went into the creation of that music, but honestly, it's not like Mayhem doesn't embarass themselves plenty. These kids listen to the music because, one they probably enjoy it, and two, they find it slightly counter-culture and a place that they can feel cool. Sounds like metal all along. Just from ridiculous hair cuts, and jean jackets, to geeky kids putting on makeup. All the same.

Not the second wave of black metal, though. Yeah there were bands who didn't partake in it (Immortal, Enslaved, etc) and you had all the black-ish bands, but the second wave of black metal IS based around all the Norwegian stuff from the early 90s. What was black metal about, then, if it's "far more" than the anti-religious and ethnocentric sentiments present in the early-90s Norwegian stuff?

Also curious how many churches were burned in the name of "black metal" rather than churches being burned for religious and cultural reasons, heh.
