What makes a good riff?

best is a superlative form of "good." nothing that is truely good is easy. the opposite of 'easy' is 'difficult'. in music, skill is required to execute and/or compose something difficult. from this one can only conclude that a riff is good if and only if it requires a great amount of skill, either to compose or to execute. you can only go unconvinced if you refuse to accept logic, which would put you in the same camp as the religious fanatics.

not really, as I said, memorable riffs don't have to be difficult to write or play, and technicality is only a small part of greatness. look at the first few master of puppets riffs, mildly difficult, but the greatness of them don't come from the intricacy alone. although that is prt of it, those riffs are great because they stick in your head a start influinceing one's own compositions.

His riffs are great, no doubts there, and when he was first writing, they weren't easy to compose, they were really counterintuitve. so compositionally, they are moderately good. so again, you're confusing 'good' 'great' and 'memorable'.

What the piss are you on about. Good riffs dont need skill. They need to be GOOD. But youve been told this by everybody but clearly arent listening.
Yes, and for a good riff to be good, it requites skill.

you're being constrained by the frequent, imprecise, abuse of the word 'good'

Nah man, you're confusing a simple topic with a complicated one. A great riff is a great riff, regardless of the amount of skill required to compose or play it.

It really is that simple.

while a great riff is a great riff, a good riff is not neccicarily a great riff.
However, if you refuse to see reason, or back up your beliefs with any reasons then there is no point in argueing.

But seriously can we convert this into the "name your favourite riff/type of riff/artists riffs/ WHATEVER thread because it would make more sense.

I find it silly to try to define a typical formula for a good riff, simply because of the fact that i enjoy so many different bands, for instance its like comparing which has the best riffs, Evile, Bloodbath, Blind Guardian, Ensiferum. Because they are so different, using different keys, tempo's and styles its not really possible. I LOVE THEM FUCKING ALL GUISE.

So yeah... erm. My favourite 3 Riffs, Not in order... would be

Megadeth: LOlall?
Bloodbath: Eaten
Ensiferum: Twilight Tavern
