On top, there are three bands:

1. Blind Guardian

2.a) Ayreon / Star One
2.b) Gamma Ray

and then, there's so much more ...

Melodic power metal like Edguy, Sonata Arctica or Stratovarius
Thrash like Slayer & Testament
Death such as Hypocrisy, Suidakra or In Flames
Prog like Dream Theater
rather "quiet" stuff like The Gathering
old school such as Ozzy, Maiden, Sabbath, Priest etc. ...

and speaking of all those "genres", what genre is
* Dark Tranquility ? is it melodic thrash ? I think so ...
* Children Of Bodom ?? can't think of a fitting genre here ...
* Savatage ? could we call it prog ? no, I'd say it's too straight for prog ...

naah .. fuck the genres

I'd call it melodic death. It isn't thrashy at all
But it rules! I'll have to see their gig in the Netherlands......I have no opportunity to attend the gigs in Germany :/

Children of Bodom are said to be melodic death metal or extreme power metal. I'd say power metal with screechy vocals.

The Savaguys themselves said in an interview that Savatage is progressive rock. They can call it whatever they want, but to me Savatage is heavy metal. The best kind.

Yeah, I don't like that dividing the music into genres too.So, if you say that you're a fan of progressive metal, does that mean that you don't buy other stuff?!
