What sounds wrong with this kick recording?

Does the kick drum sound kick ass in the room? I maybe hear a touch to much
"air woof" which can be cause by improper placement near vent/port hole, a lot of the kick sounds we like are not accomplished with a single mic and very little processing. Not saying its not possible and great albums haven't been made this way but I find it difficult to get the "attack" and the "lowend" both perfect with one mic.
Don't get on my case for this one, im a true believer in getting it right at the source but with your mic I'd probably try to achieve a great attack and mid range, and add a touch of bottom back in with some eq or rbass or sample or anything. I know myself sometimes i disregard a mic placement and good sounding drum because it lacked low end. So a moved the mic. Just a suggestion no right answer here.

I hear ya. There's also a condenser on the kick which is doing that subkick thing good. I'm looking on youtube at other people using the Beta 52 and I'm learning that the mic just sucks for what I hear in my head. Gotta love that!

Yep, I use a Beta 52 as well and it sounds sort of like your sample there.

We tweaked my drummers kick drum tuning for probably hours to get it the best we could and it still sounds like doo-doo under that 52. =/

If the mic sucks, perhaps you should consider blending it with a sample or just program the kick?
