Erby Walker, 70, longtime Varsity counterman passed away yesterday at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Damn, this really sucks for us that like the Varsity Erby had been there for 55 years, and I looked forward to hear him saying "What'll you have"

The trip to the Varsity this year won't be the same.

I remember watching a Channel 11 documentary on the country's best hot dog places when I was like 11 and seeing that dude. He would run through the whole menu in one big jumbled sentence and in like 10 secs. Then getting to actually seen him in person at PP just added to the comedy.

And I like 3 or 4 heavy dogs and maybe a few yellow dogs.

Wow, J-man... that is sad news! I remember you introducing me to the Varsity for lunch when we were at VII. I will join you for a tribute dog (or two) in his honor.

As a follow-up on this, it turns out that Erby was also a co-worker's step-dad. (!) (Needless to say, when the "pass the hat for a fellow employee's loss" memo came around, surprising all of us, I tossed in some extra dinero.)

His passing has been a fairly major news item here, since he was iconic with the Varsity, had worked there seemingly forever, and single-handedly coined their official slogan.

Bumpage.... I was looking forward to seeing him. I only found out about the Varsity a couple of months ago via either Travel Channel or History Channel. Damn shame he passed as he was iconic as others have mentioned.

Coincidentally, the Varsity just celebrated their 70th? 80th? anniversary this past weekend, and had free stuff and bands playing on the upper parking deck.
If I still lived ITP*, I'd have probably headed down there for the festivities, on the "hey, cool, free ice-cream!" principle. :)
