What's Projector like?

there are harsher songs than therein on projector, some of them reminding of the mind's i, but nothing that is very close in style to the gallery. on damage done i guess the closest song to something off of projector is format c: for cortex.
on projector, expect varied, rather longish songs with acoustic bridges and lots of clean vocals. you should probably want to check both extremes by downloading the sun fired blanks (the hardest track) and auctioned (the softer). then imagine the rest being somewhere in the between.

Sorry, I meant Therein. What are Therion like?

therion play some sort of symphonic dark metal. in the beginning there was a lead vocalist singing some death grunts, then they just abandoned that line and employed an impressive amount of opera singers and players. there is a guy in the band who writes the - rather complex - music, the - rather pointless - lyrics and plays the guitar. then he takes, like, a battalion of sopranoes baritones and whatnots and has them go symphonic while he and a few sessionists play this orchestral metal in the vein of early theatre of tragedy.
once in a while there's a guest singer who does the vocals on each album's token fast track, and he's often from some power metal band on therion's label, which is nuclear blast if i remember correctly. the latest two entries - if i recall correctly - in the list of guest vocalists were ralf scheepers (primal fear, early gamma ray) and hansi kursch (blind guardian, of course).

some find therion boring because of the lack of a constant lead singing voice, but i disagree: especially the most "ethereal" songs are a pleasure to the ears and exceptionally high quality music. of course if you just want things to be brutal you're better off checking out something else, but they're as close to classical music as i can get and not pass out from boredom.

i think that for someone coming from classic heavy metal projector is the best possible approach to dt. i know that in my ignorance i was impressed by the songs on it most because i can connect them with familiar structures of guitarwork - the way the instruments are played is really heavy metal whereas albums like the gallery probably follow a death metal canon i'm not aware of.

Actually those are my 2 fav songs of projector. The way Mikael sings in Auctioned makes me wonder why he doesn't use his clean vox more often

this spans another question: how come dark tranquillity play death metal? i know this sounds kind of silly, but i always saw death metal as a genre with very closed boundaries, like growling vocals all the time and lyrics that can't be too smart. dark tranquillity obviously has the potential to overcome all of this and from what i gather on their webpage they're not even death metal fans...

You hit the spot there prince. You see,Death is melodical DEATH metal....at least to me Dark Tranquillity is melodic metal with growling vocals, but they come out of that description once in a while. I don't know if that made sense...I mean that Dark Tranquillity doesn't really have all the death metal aspects. Then again it's easier to give people the idea of what they're like since all bands from the Gothenburg scene are listed as melodic death metal. At least Projector is definitely not melodic death metal, and still it's one of their best albums...btw I think that Exposure is the heaviest song on the album, though it's not on all releases.
SO I'LL CRACK YOUR FUCKIN SHELL

NP: Norther - Darkest Time (but by the influence of this thread soon enough you know what...)

Oh,btw death metal lyrics can be smart too if you look at Death, but I get your point...Cannibal Corpse's,Carcass' etc. lyrics are just plain bullshit.
Hypocrisy's Paled Empty Sphere has nice lyrics too...rest of that bands discography doesn't get my approval though.

Projector is closer in guitarwork to Damage Done, and I'd say Format C, The Enemy and Ex Nihilio bear some resemblance to Projector. Theres a lot of normal piano, more mingling as in the style of the dying seconds of Punish. The vocals are again closer to DD, as are the lyrics.

The breakdowns into acoustic, quieter moments, is actually quite a lot like the Gallery, verse structure more like Damage Done...

I love it personally, but if you dislike Therein... well. Download a few more, but I don't see much hope for it...
