What's the difference between Stoner and Doom?

I've always kinda wondered this too, because I think both genres names are relevant.

FOr example, Monster Magnet, obviously "stoner" (though I like "desert rock" better), but there is nothing really doomy about them. Kyuss, too.

But then you've got Sleep and Warhorse that can be considered stoner doom. Church of Misery fits in here, too, though they hate the term "stoner", as said in their CD booklet.

In other words, not every "stoner" band is doom, and vice versa. huh....

"In stoner rock, doom's iconography of death and destruction was replaced by things like mushrooms, space travel, and half-naked women. Likewise, whereas the starting point of doom had traditionally been tales of human suffering, stoner rock became more concerned with fast cars, good trips, and positive vibrations in general. The actual music relies mainly on groove, although the tempo can vary a lot. While the more popular mainstream stoner rock is often plain up-tempo retro rock with only few if any slower parts, the more underground stoner can get extremely slow as well. This slowness, however, seems to differ from doom metal's slowness in that it usually lacks the utter heaviness of doom. Also, instead of seeking the saddening impact extremely slow music may have on the listener, stoner slowless often stems from and/or is meant to enhance the impact of the musicians' altered sense of time caused by drug-taking."

The only similar thing between "stoner" and "doom" is the big Black Sabbath influence. There is no point in comparing them, or judging them with the same standards.
"Stoner rock" is the GAYEST term ever. I've explained why in other posts.

i think to be qualified as "stoner" the musicians would have to be "stoner" and live that lifestyle ...

I don't really like the word "stoner" either, but it is a commonly used term, and when used, everyone knows what you mean. Like I said, I much prefer "desert rock" to describe Monster Magnet, Kyuss, QOTSA, etc.

Where I draw the difference: Doom should make you want to hide in isolation and drain you of any positive feelings. Stoner rock should make you want to roam the streets with rings of cannabis trailing behind you, restlessly searching for the next hooker... :)

.

doom's iconography of death and destruction
the starting point of doom had traditionally been tales of human suffering
hmm
Why i cant recall any of these things having a great role in the first and major doom metal bands?
Especially the second sentence, is completely of no substance.
And i must say that doom metal is not about how slow a band's music is. Also the "sad feeling" is not about the music's "speed". Some so called "stoner" bands deliver equally sad feelings to the listener.

Yes they do. But they had other themes in their lyrics at the same level (the occult, fantasy, love, religion). That "human suffering" may have a very general interpretation (i spelled that wrong yes). EDM had "Solitude" yes but what about the other songs?Saint Vitus wrote about drinking and drugs or horror/fantastical stories more than "sadness" etc (and they combined them too). I think that doom metal is misunderstood about the "sadness" thing. Its just that when the first doom bands had that kind of lyrics, the COMBINATION with the definite "sad melodies" made a result so emotionally STRONG, that the next generation took that feeling and used it with miserable lyrics only- thus now doom is connected with negative and painfull emotions. I cant explain this very good because my english suck .. but i thing you get my point.

While i would choose stoner over doom, it's hard to compare. How do I compare Monster Magnet to Thergothon to Church of Misery?

But yeah, I wold choose stoner rock (Kyuss, MM) over stoner doom (SLeep, Warhorse).

But I think Church of Misery owns them all. What a band....

Also, where do you put a band like The Black League? They have rock tendencies, and their music can be melancholic, along with Motorhead and Danzig type overtones. Hmmm...
