So I have this 5150 from a friend and his presence knob is broken off and of course whoever sold it to him that way had it at 10 so it doesnt sound the best.

I have absolutely no clue how to fix it, or how much it would cost.
Keep in mind I would probably have to send it out to a friend or something to get fixed because I have no soldering experience.

can anyone help me out on what this would cost

I only have a BOM for a 5150II, but it's a PCB mounted 10K pot that you could order yourself. Just needs to be desoldered, and solder the new one in. Probably would require removing the board, but it should be easy in a Peavey, since everything is connected by molex connectors.

My supervisor at work (ex-pro electrical engineer) says that when he's building stuff he never PCB mounts things that people touch - I guess for this specific reason!

Shouldn't be too much of a hard job - as those guys said ^^^

Yeah it isn't that hard to do and pretty easy to get to. To take it to an amp tech would probably be on the order of $70-$100 which is often the minimum to get them to do anything.

In a pinch, you could take a small screwdriver or knife you don't care about... see if you carve a small groove in whats left and then turn the pot to dial it in. If its a plastic shaft it should be fairly easy. Metal is when it sucks, and I would be kind of shocked it broke.

I have a few PA heads and such that I have to use vice grips to turn them. Hillbilly as hell but it works just fine.

yea its one of the metal ones that broke.

no clue how they managed that but then asked me to look at it like i know how to fix it.

but ill give the screwdriver thing a try

Or use something like superglue/metalglue + old knobshaft.
Not the smartest way, but it wouldn't be such a hassle than unscrewing a lot of potis... and it'll be a lot cheaper.

If it works...chickenhead on top of it & voila.

Cheers, Markus.
