I remember in primary school (junior high), when it started to be cool to wear those chains on your wallet, and I was like 8 and I couldn't work out where people were getting them until the next time I went shopping I saw some "cool" kids buying them from the pet shop . The cool kids then got teased for being animal loves and that was the end of that phase.
