Michael and Walt are set to guest star in season 3, so I'm not sure if they return to the island on the season finale, or he stars in a flashback. They did say that the castaways connections were to be strengthened, though it sounds rather typical for him to appear in a flashback. I think they still haven't covered Walt's connection with the island, as opposed to Locke's and Rose's, which are basically cancer and disability cures.
