It was a lie started by Eisenhower(I think) during the 50's when Sweden and the rest had created the welfare-state and he was trying to make us look bad so that people in the US wouldn't demand it.

I heard though that's is pretty fucking expensive to live there if you aren't a citizen/weren't born there though.

It is very expensive over there.
Denmark, not as expensive.
Sweden, not expensive either.
