If it is a virus then you should get rid of it. One of my roommates had a virus that did that last week... But now he removed it, with some difficulty.

I have a ll sorts of virus scan thingies, but i'm half inclinded to take them all off, a lot of people have told me that 50% of those things PUT viruses on your computer

Nah, most of the time they don't... At least mine don't.
So I say keep the virusscanners, or at least get a good one.

And for that shut-down virus I'd try emptying your temp-directory, it was located there at my roommates pc.

McAffee and Norton both offer fine virus protection software packages, and they certainly won't cause you to get one. Just don't install any 'virtual firewall' software if you're running XP, especially if you use any sort of routers or hubs.
