So they picked out a field where nobody lived and settled their problems there.

what do you think soldiers got their suplies from? hunting hares in the wood? woudn´t it be much easer to storm a village, rape their woman and steal all their chickens?

Yes it would be easier but it didn't happen very often.
Never forget that in those days the honor and glory code was very strong.
Most of the time the village gave them supplies.

Yes people die but today the civilians are the ones suffering the most.
The rules of war does actually still apply today but nobody follows them.
