Who's Your Favorite Bass Player?

What Sheehan does, few others can do. So, from that's perspective, I enjoy listening to him. The Harris actually drives the music is somewhat unique in Metal. Steve DiGiorgio and Troy Tiptun are among my favorite Prog players. I also like Martin Mendez of Opeth. I like his sound and style.

ahem, anyone like slapbass?
I engage in slapbass on a daily basis. Those that hate it, can't do it. Slap/pop is the ultimate technique in bass playing because it almost completely separates one from the electric guitar and firmly plants you into percussive territory, but you can also have notes and very lyrical phrasing at the same time. Put it this way, when you hear someone slapping, there is no doubt what instrument is being played. Not counting MIDI keyboards of course. :p

The dude from Korn can be good, but he has a disgusting tone, too much treble. I can appreciate slap in a heavy riff-oriented environment though, definitely.

Good to see NAD. I'll listen for that treble. I ve never played bass guitar, or any guitar for that matter, but I know what I like, and I dont understand why something so interesting is so reviled in the underground community?

I think it's really like anything else, it can't be used all the time. It's cool though in the right music.
True.

Xenophobia, possible racism. Slap bass isn't very metal (though it certainly can be) and it's primarily done by black dudes. Or people just don't like the way it sounds, I dunno.

the title track off opeth's blackwater park always occured me as slightly impressive because of the slapbass near the end, fits in well with the metal riffage.

Michael Manring is overtaking Sean Malone for me. Digiorgio, Claypool, and Harris are all contenders, too.

For slap bass in metal, see Gracepoint. Mmmm... good. Another similar, though less metal band, is The Beyond, but their CDs are both long out of print. Great stuff.

I think I have a couple other metal bands with slap bass in my collection, but the names aren't popping to mind. Mind you, even Gracepoint isn't that heavy. More like a light thrash sound; definitely metal, but not extreme.

Manring is fucking awesome. I love his use of harmonics, and he has one of the coolest brown notes I've ever felt!

Solo artist, he's done a lot of shit though. http://www.manthing.com/

I highly recommend the two Attention Deficit albums, they are jam collaborations with Tim Alexander and Alex Skolnick, and contain some amazing stuff. Great jams only bested by incredible chops, I mean, just look at who is in the band!

Oh and he rules even more because he plays SWR, the Greatest Bass Amps in All the Land!!! except maybe David Eden but those are too expensive
