Bands like Dream Theater, Judas Priest, Rush, Iron Maiden develop a fan base over time because they're great. People just take to them. Bands like Avenged Sevenfold are really hard to swallow, and untolerable, thus them being shoved down our throats by radio stations almost forcing people to become fans. People won't give them a second listen otherwise.

Dream Theater may be a case of people getting into them over time, and I guess Priest also (I don't know if they were so big before 1980), but Maiden and Rush were always pretty big as far as I know.
But, Rush and Maiden NEVER get radio play. You might see their videos from time to time on VH1 Classic, but that's really it.

I sympathize with both sides when it comes to love or hate bands like Opeth and Dream Theater. First two (with mr jaymz labrüe) Dream Theater are awesome and the rest is a mixed bag imo. If i'm getting started on Opeth i'm gonna be here all night

I agree with the critics who say their songwriting is incoherent and very lacking, for it often is when it comes to the whole picture. but the individual parts are often killer (not on GR though) and Åkerfeldts growls virtually resembles satan himself. There, I said it.

Actually, those mallrats all love old Metallica. Besides that I know some of them and they are always praising old Metallica, Trivium's popularity should be ample proof.

Going to shows to meet chicks is ridiculous. Anyone who does that shouldn't be allowed to buy concert tickets. That's what night clubs are for. If they are willing to listen to shitty music for the chance that they might meet someone, they should just go to a club, listen to shitty music and have a more than sure thing.
