Why don't Mike and Peter like TNATSW?

I know that Mike not liking The Night and the Silent Water has been sort of discussed. You think he doesnt like the song or he doesnt like it because it is about his grandfather. Also, Peters least favorite song is The Night and the Silent Water also!! Why dont they like it? Its like my favorite song. I guess they'll never play it live eh?

They didn't like the dynamics of the song. But, like you, it is one of my favorites none the less. Its kindof like Metallica fans... they all love the album And Justice For All, but James Hetfield fucking hates it.

Mikael also dislikes Moonlapse Vertigo but that song is just fantastic, problably ne of my favourites...

He said that MV is impossible to play right, that it's not even right on the album. I don't really know what it's supposed to sound like then.

The first minute or two of Moonlapse Vertigo is brilliant, too bad to hear that they wont be doing that live.

How about a live MEDLEY of all the best bits of the songs they dont really want to play? The beginning of Moonlapse into 13:45 into Black Rose Immortal, into the middle of Advent into the intro of Serenity Painted Death into the middle/end of Blackwater Park? Badass.

I never really understand it when the main songwriter of a band says that he doesn't like a certain song. I mean, why the hell did he write it then? I can understand a drummer or something not liking a song, since they don't have much say as far as what goes into the songs are concerned. But nobody told Mikael he had to write the song. I don't know, it just confuses the hell outta me.

Well, I often hear of artists that don't like stuff that I do. It always makes me feel kinda wierd. I quite like that Opeth song.

My favourite album by Yngwie, "Magnum Opus", is one that he is on record as hating. I was like
And to hear Danny from Anathema say they would like to re-record the Eternity album, was the same thing to me, to my ears that is a perfect album.
And Jonas Renkse is always putting down his October Tide project....

 *shakes head*

The end of TNATSW (7-something till the end) is probably on par with Deliverance's outro, to me at least. It's great. And the whispering owns a lot of the other vocals in the song. :)

As I'm sure all the other musicians on this forum know, artists have a greatly warped perception of their own work. There are several reasons behind this, but in the end, a musician's opinion of his own music shouldn't be seen as a reflection of the music itself. At most, it should be a reflection of the musician.

Hello people!

I don't wanna slag off any of my/our older tunes, but with TNATSW it's different as I wrote that to my grandfather who'd passed away and it was terrible. Much like the whole recordings of the new albums was "tainted" by my grandmothers passing.
This together with the fact that I don't like the production of the "Morningrise" album at all + some of the riffs for that song feels really "old" today. I liked it at the time and I still think it's a good song, but if I have to chose my least fave Opeth song then that is it.

I consider all songs a document of that time and TNATSW is no exception, but I can't really relate to that tune anymore. Lyrically it's one of those songs I just wanted to leave behind as soon as I was done, you know.

As for Moonlapse I think it could have been fantastic, but the recording isn't as good as it should have been. Some ideas on that tune are fanstastic if I may say so myself.
It's just so hard to get it right when we play it, and I can't really understand what's the problem, so I guess we'll leave it out for now.

Take care guys
Mike
