I need to take a moment and just gush on here over how fucking incredible Woods of Ypres were. I only own their fourth and fifth (final) albums, but they are absolute masterpieces. I definitely consider them to be the spiritual successors to Type O, because they sure as hell have the Type O sound, just without the humor.

I hear that their earlier stuff was more along the lines of black metal. I haven't checked YouTube for those albums yet, but I'm definitely going to have to soon.

Grey Skies & Electric Light is just a godly album to me. The opening song is absolutely chilling - not only because it's an amazing song to open the album with, but because the lyrics predicted the singer's death (which is a horrible shame that he went so young).

Just wanna toast these guys, and hear what you all have to say about WoY.

I've enjoyed what I've heard. If I remember what I heard correctly, you'd probably also dig Woods of Desolation. And various other wood-related and wood-inducing metal bands.

Sorry, nope. Just tried them out and it's 100% not my cup of tea. Black metal was never my thing.

"Wooden Pints" by Korpiklaani is great though! If we're still talkig about wood, I mean...

Yes, let's continue talking about wood. I approve of that one, Korpiklaani's pretty cool.

How do you feel about this particular wood?

Their green album had hilarious attempts at Peter Steele vocals. I liked their earlier black metal stuff to some degree, but you gotta admit that band had some of the worst/cheesy lyrics out there.

Padre's Wood was pretty cool! I always liked that southern twang with a heavier background.

I said WoY sounded like Type O....maybe I should clarify that. WoY's sound absolutely REMINDS me of Type O (especially the vocals), and it does bring to mind what an alternate universe Type O may have sounded like.

I've tried to like Woods of Ypres like 14 times, never with success. The vocals and lyrics are so goddamn cheesy. There are decent riffs to be found here and there, but I just couldn't get past the image in my head of a 15-year-old kid at the mic, trying to deepen his voice while singing poems out of his diary. Oh, and RIP David Gold or something.
