Ok, so I've been doing an assignment where I've been looking at songs where the words and the music complement each other and why. And I thought it might be cool to ask you guys to pick songs of your own, describing the music and vocals and why they complement each other.

So who wants to go first? ;)

Off the top of my head :

-Strapping Young Lad - "Room 429" (CopShootCop cover)

you really need to hear this track while reading the lyrics, its an amazing piece of music, doomy, heavy and loaded with meaning. making an absolutly flawless backing for the dark urban nightmare of the lyrics.

-Deathspell Omega - "Third Prayer" and "Sola Fide I"

again, look it up on youtube while reading the lyric sheet, both songs come from the album "Si Monumentum Requires.... Circumspire", a dense and atmospheric slab of Orthodox Black Metal, the lyrics explore the metaphysics of catholic doctrine and the whole piece blends together perfectly.

"Blessed is He, that murders Christ in Himself, and in Hys fellow Men"

-Manic Street Preachers - "Die In The Summertime" and "The Intense Humming Of Evil"

both of these songs come from the album "The Holy Bible", the music is awkward, almost Djenty in places, and one of the most baffeling and impenetrable rock albums ever.
the lyrics are very dark, the quasi-suicidal diaries of the guitarist Richy James Edwards, who disappeared after the album was released, never to be seen again.
the songs here provide the sonic equvilant of dropping dead from a drug overdose on a bright summers day.

-Iron Monkey - the entire "Our Problem" album, but specifically songs like "House Anxiety"

filthy detuned agro from start to finish, just listen.

-Funeral Mist - "Blessed Curse"

this tune features a terrifying vocal sample from a Fundamentalist Christian preacher, backed up by one of the most frightening riffs of all time.
first time i heard it, the blood froze in my veins.

Nice list! Any chance of describing why you feel the words and music complement each other?

Cool, this is just something I've never been too great at describing and I thought seeing other peoples opinions might make it clearer in my mind as to which ways music and words can complement each other.

some more:

--Kode9 and the Space Ape - "Memories of the future" (album)

Stark, minimalistic Dubstep beats and deep sub-bass create an atmosphere if frigid paranoia, serving as a perfect backdrop to the cryptic lyrical wanderings of the Spaceape.

-- Burial - "Near Dark"

i don't know why, but the lyrics just "fit" perfectly.

the dirty production, agressive, dissonant music and fast pace fit jacob bannon's hyper-depressed, ultra-angry lyrics and vocal delivery PERFECTLY.
one of the most uncompromisingly agressive albums of all time.

Anything off of 'Dirt' by Alice In Chains. Imagine writing a bunch of songs about one of your best friends killing himself with his addictions, and then having that very friend sing them all. The only way it could ever have worked was to put it over the grimiest, heaviest riffs possible - and they did exactly that. The music fits the mood of the lyrics absolutely perfectly.

This is quite beachlike music, must be those upstrokes on the guitar, and the panpipe lead thing really bringing out teh sechs and makes me think of you stee

WHAM! - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

Both lyrics and music are pretty gay.

great song.

how about some meshuggah songs? future bread machine and stuff. Alot of their vocal delivery is very syncopated and rhythmic. not to mention lyrics about machines.

also Black sabbath by black sabbath. They play the tritone(I could be wrong), which are the devil's notes(again might be wrong) and sing about satan at the same time.
