World debut of Amaranthe's brand-new video for Amaranthine

It's a good thing I know how charming you are in person otherwise I might not have gotten what you were saying. I think I'm the only one who wasn't offended by that. Is that bad?

It was less that it was kind of a poor taste joke and more because it's a wide, general consensus of male metalheads. Female fronted bands are caught between a rock and a hard-place.

You either have to be stunningly gorgeous for your band to do well... see Epica, Amaranthe, Within Temptation, Nightwish... and be the subject of both "LOL SHE'S HOT SHE SHOULD WEAR LESS CLOTHES SHOW US YOUR TITS (I actually heard some class act scream this from the floor during a female fronted band's last PP Visit. Wanted to clock the guy.)" and subversely, "If she wasn't hot they wouldn't be popular."

OR.

You're not a super-model type woman (See: Diablo Swing Orchestra, Sister Sin) and you're subjected to "Man she's not as hot as "X"."

I dunno, it's annoying to see that within the confines of intelligent discussion and musical merit. If I played this game with male singers, based on looks, I'd bring it up every time I mentioned I didn't care for a band. Can you imagine how silly that would be?

"Dude PoS blows but I'd like to see Gildenlow in a speedo while he plays guitar on stage." [Disclaimer: the dude is not at all attractive to me.]

So when she's crawling sexually along the floor, they aren't trying to exploit her vagina for sales? They bring it on themselves. Tough. If you want to pose sexually, deal with it. She's acting slutty in the video, I have no idea what she's like in real life, but they full well understand that they are prostituting their music, even if they think the music ought to sell to a blind man.

Not all bands with female lead vocalists do this. Amaranthe has made that choice for themselves.

p.s. We've all seen Gildenlow wearing less than a speedo (refer to their last video). Nobody wants that. But plenty of women wouldn't mind if Tommy was wearing one.

Wait a second, really? You think that's acting slutty? Man, you have to see some hip hop videos or something. I mean, really, wait until you go to a beach... I think there's a difference between acting slutty and acting sexy on a music video. It's a very thin line, but Elize has not crossed that line in this video.

Unless, of course, you're a bit more conservative/prud-ish than most people. :)

Glenn should get pissed more often. Every time he does, he leaves these damn classic one-liners....'wouldn't piss in their mouths if their gums were on fire'.....'two tugs of a dead dog's cock'....and now, this duck feather comment. More people should be dicks.

 Have to admit, these one-liners are the best.

ProgPower USA shirt next year:

(back: logo, "If you don't like it, I could give two tugs of a dead dog's cock.", and then the bands logos)

Whoa. Seriously? I just watched the video for the third time, and while it is somewhat provocative, it can also be called passionate imo. Not at ALL slutty. She's got an awful lot of clothes on for one thing and does not make the outright "sexual" moves you see endlessly in pop videos. We don't usually argue, dude, but I take offense to at least the wording of your post.

(Aside: I'd really like to see NO vocalist in a Speedo. Save it for the Olympics.)

Yes, but they didn't really catch fire until they settled on Charlotte Wessels as their lead singer for the 2nd album. So, my example still stands.

Who cares? Wasn't Charlotte on the 1st album? Amarathe has 3 singers. Maybe their next album will have only 1. Its not like a band is ONLY determined by the singer in it. The BAND still wrote the music that was recorded on the album... your example, which is completely flawed and unjustified, is moot sir :loco:

Yeah, the lack of a crowd for Rage was disappointing. That being said, it took me a while to like Rage and I can't say at the point of the show that I was a fan.

Well, that right there is enough to discredit your ability to instantly recognize good music :hahamiddlefinger: I was hooked from the 1st track of Unity (which is the 1st song I ever heard from them).

I don't have a problem with a girl or even a guy being sexy in a metal video. This isn't grunge, sex appeal is a perfectly acceptable part of a heavy metal image.

I'm very excited about them being at the festival. Hottest debut of the year, IMO. What's not to like? The guitarist shreds, the vocalists are all good, they write great hooks.

And I just don't get why some people don't like female-fronted metal bands. You never have that kind of problem with fan acceptance in any other genre, except maybe rap.

I'm in no way saying its as bad as some of the modern pop/hip-hop videos (especially the ones with under-18 girls... egads).

She does have a lot of clothes, and what you call provocative I'm calling slutty. Maybe slutty isn't the best word. It's her movement, not what she physically reveals. But I do stand that they are using sexuality to assist sales, thus its expected that people are going to respond to that sexuality. Though, men can still behave, and ought to. However, I find it unfortunate when bands/women do this, because it makes it more difficult for them to be accepted as a band that has appeal based on their music alone. BUT! Sexuality has always been used to sell music, and I don't expect it to end anytime soon.

p.s. as for my other words, yes it was provocative and over-the-top. I apologize if I offended anybody. And I'm perfectly fine if it gets deleted.

p.p.s. I was going to point to Scabbia as an example of somebody who does it right, but she also uses sexuality a fair bit in the videos. Maybe its just nearly impossible to get away with not doing it.

Scabbia uses sexuality quite a lot. I don't think I need to post THE photo that everyone references. By now everyone has seen it. Scabbia is definitely sexualized.

I think that's just how things are, though, if you've got an attractive frontwoman, her sexuality is going to be brought to the fore and used to sell albums. It's common knowledge that sex sells.

It's just different taste in music. Some people just don't like the sound of female singers. I do, but I've definitely become more snobbish when it comes to female-fronted bands as I feel a lot of them sound the same and aren't anything special. Amaranthe, outside of Jake just sort of bores me.

I'd like to hear one of these ladies who sing well learn how to properly growl too. That would be a sight to see. Just one long growl Michael Stanne style.

>Wearing leggings and moving in a provocative style = slutty

Spoken like a true virgin.

(also inb4 crying. Not calling you a virgin just saying you sound like one with that assertion. Also didn't Glenn JUST say a page ago that the bands read this forum? "Slutty" really?)

Sex appeal is apart of entertainment period. Let's be real, "sex sells" is not a lie. I just think people are taking it way too far. I mean, for example, someone posted an album cover by some band a few weeks ago with two chicks that looked like they walked out of an 80's porno. It wasn't the exploitation of sexuality that bothered me so much as how ridiculous a "serious" band's cover looks like that. On the other hand, Steel Panther's new cover is in almost the same vain, but there's nothing that says serious about that band whatsoever. It suits them.

But if it's done tastefully, I think it's fine -- more than fine even -- a form of high art. Cabaret for example is essentially the tasteful art of sexualization. Being provocative without being a stripper or whatever. Although of course, I could play devil's advocate and tear everything I just said apart via feminist criticism, but I won't.

I can't take anything you say seriously when you just called something that Geoff Tate's crotch has been heavily involved in 'tasteful' :loco::loco:
