writing good doom

what do you think is required for a good doom song? how much lead is too much? whats too simple? whats too busy? is down tuning required? old vintage gear or modern gear?

Personally, good doom is not measured by what gear or how much lead is used, but the level of sheer emotion involved. The greates doom I've heard comes from bands who pour everything into the music: Novembers Doom, My Dying Bride, Swallow The Sun, While Heaven Wept, and Lacrimas Profundere to name a few.
