WTF with Nuclear Blast 2008 band contest??

Really? How so dude?

they take (good) bands, encage 'em and if the sales figures don't match the expected results they ditch the band and/or rip 'em off one way or the other.

not to say they're the only ones who work that way. seems like a good part of the "biz" follows that path. I'm not saying they're not nice guys in person, it's the attitude I don't like and I don't understand why so many musicians feel attracted to them. of course they are huge in terms of impact but the price you have to pay...:Smug: take Roadrunner for example. big but a totally different approach, much more positive IMHO.

Roadrunner is also ripping people off with their 6-months-after-release-special-editions, and they mostly follow the trends, so it's not a very secure place for bands. Once a trend of a given music style is out, they kick their bands out. Right now it's progressive metal, but we'll see for how long they will keep Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Dream Theater signed once they deem the "trend" to have passed. Before that it was numetal, and I think they've kicked almost all numetal bands out.

I have heard some shady stories of Road Runner signing bands, putting them in the studio and then shelving them with no support to get Tax breaks/credits for business expenses incurred.

Sounds really fucked if it's true.

I know of a few bands that would tell you that Roadrunner is pure scum....

Seems like they are all the same though. They are in it to make as much money as possible, and will do whatever it takes to do just that.

The music biz is shady all around. You would be hard pressed to find a label that has moved some records that don't have some bands complaining. Certainly some are worse than others but overall the convergence of art and $ is always subject to conflict.
I will say in my personal (non-biz) experience the folks at NBUSA have been unbelievably nice and supportive.

Peaceville, granted, not as big. Dunno about NBUSA but I know some bands at NBEurope who don't state the nicest things... but in the long run, I agree with you.

Seems like a thread about labels in general would be a good thing...you never know what can happen.
I've had some experience, but I'd like to hear about eveyones...

I think this thread is heading in that direction anyway, which is fine by me, since I don't think there's much more to be said about the original topic ;)
