if you're going from an outboard mic pre, that only has xlr out, to a digital interface, that only has trs ins, what do you do? just use an adapter?

specific example:
hooking a great river mic pre to an rme fireface 800 that has all 4 front xkr channels in use

still confused about this,

Yeah...a TRS cable is essentially the same thing as an XLR...you still have 3 points of contact that do the same thing. So if you have one end as XLR, and one as TRS, everything is fine. Or even an XLR -> TRS adapter for one end. Same difference.
