prog is a genre of music that in my opinion has become too self important for its own good. it consists of complexity, often with storytelling, and focuses on technical skill as well as composition from a purely musical standpoint.

real prog as i define it is ANY music of ANY genre that pushes the boundaries of what has been done before it, technically OR lyrically or conceptually.

Prog isn't really a genre as much as an approach to music. It is about experimentation, about creative freedom, about new ways of looking at and combining music, about always changing and pursuing something new. There are certain elements that often characterize prog, but as soon as bands try and run to a formula of what prog is, they have missed the whole point. To me, trying to define what prog is runs counter to what prog is.

i totally agree...thats the best definition i have ever heard. the word "prog" is like a prefix for any genre. it is not a genre itself. like you said, its an approach to music.
