Favourite albums that aren't tha mehtulz?

Simple enough to find 3 for me.

The lord of the rings trilogy soundtrack- Howard Shore

Jagged Little Pill- Alanis Morissette

Once More With Feeling - Placebo.


Then we get into nirvana ands tuff but they're too rocky to be in this I guess...

And If I wanted to go further I could start listing britney spears albums, but I won't bother doing that.

and then a few other things that don't get nearly as many spins as these 2.

edit: well...guess they are too rockish for this thread..should have concentrated more while reading :lol:
 
Saul Williams, his self titled record was awesome, the rest are a bit uneven but still good.
Tom Waits, I love nearly everything he's done, always interesting and unique. The Heart of Saturday Night is probably my favorite
Portishead, live at Roseland Ballroom, cd or the dvd, to watch them perform that material live is unbelievable.
Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, dont know what the record is called but it opens with a tune called "Dont Blame Me", very chill and listenable. I think I love jazz because I just dont understand enough about it to dissect it the way I do rock music and it forces me to just enjoy it on its own terms.

Sigur Rós - Ágætis byrjun and their stuff in general is excellent for enhancing moods. Digging Jónsi's solo work too.

Caspian - Tertia. The only album I have ever bought because it was running in the background of a music store. It was the song Malacoda, and I instantly fell in love with that lead guitar. I consider post-rock a different beast than metal/rock so there you go.

And a childhood favourite that stuck with me: Jean Michel Jarre - Équinoxe. Space aliens flying through your living room; what's not to like?

I take it by some of the responses we are talking about non metal/hard rock as some of the answers would fall in the general category of rock music.

Most of my favorites that would fall outside those criteria would probably fall into the prog rock vein of things:

Marillion - Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws, all with Fish on vocals, and Brave from the Hogarth era.

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (quite possibly my favorite album of all time - one of the few I find absolutely no fault with - musical and sonic nirvana for me).

Peter Gabriel - III (Melt) and So

I'd have to toss in every Gabriel era Genesis album, but I'll also include the overly commercial, yet quirky, Collins era Abacab (although I also like A Trick of the Tail with Collins singing as well).

I could go on for a while just in the prog/neo-prog world but I'll stop here for now.

Some of my other non metal/hard rock oddities would include:

Kosheen - Resist and Damage (I can't say enough about how much I love Sian Evans voice).

Another artist I'm finding an appreciation for is Gotye - his experimentation musically and vocalizations seem clearly inspired by Peter Gabriel to me (and many others from what I've read). I have his Making Mirrors album and like it quite a bit. His song "Somebody That I Used to Know" exposed me to Kimbra and her album Vows and it's eclectic collection of pop infused experimentation.

I'll think of some more and post later.

I thought i was the only one who noticed that.
 
Loving "High Violet" by the National since it came out.
Really dark but clear mix that is great for resetting the ears when mixing.
Also anything Sigur Ros if I am in the right frame of mind for it.
Actually I don't really listen to metal much at all other than to "keep up" with current sound or to listen to a bands references before a session.
 
Thought of another one - Tori Amos Boys for Pele saw it in my recommendations on MOG and listened to it for the first time in a couple of years, have it on CD from way back when - and while it was a bit too experimental for some, it fit right in my Kate Bush loving wheelhouse.

Live version of "Caught a Lite Sneeze" (great performance of great track!)
