Mine has to be 1993, the list of classic albums that were released that year seems endless:

SEPULTURA - Chaos A.D.
TYPE O NEGATIVE - Bloody Kisses
PARADISE LOST - Icon
SENTENCED - North From Here
EDGE OF SANITY - The Spectral Sorrows
DARK TRANQUILLITY - Skydancer
DISSECTION - The Somberlain
DISMEMBER - Indecent & Obscene
SEANCE - Saltrubbed Eyes
CRYPT OF KERBEROS - World of Myths
KATATONIA - Dance of December Souls
ANATHEMA - Serenades
ENTOMBED - Wolverine Blues
METALLICA - Live Shit: Binge & Purge
NECROPHOBIC - The Nocturnal Silence
UNANIMATED - In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead
MORBID ANGEL - Covenant
EMPEROR - Emperor EP

Not necessarily classics for me personally, but generally definitely considered classics:
IMMORTAL - Pure Holocaust
DARKTHRONE - Under a Funeral Moon

And I probably forgot some..

Seems I didn't forgot that many, yet the creator of that wiki did! :)
1990 was pretty fucking sick as well. Priest, Entombed, Queensryche, Megadeth and Kreator released (debatably) their respective best albums in that single year.

How about 1986: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_in_heavy_metal_music#Albums

METALLICA - Master of Puppets
SLAYER - Reign in Blood
FLOTSAM AND JETSAM - Doomsday for the Deceiver
KREATOR - Pleasure to Kill
IRON MAIDEN - Somewhere in Time
MEGADETH - Peace Sells
:OMG:

Only love for early 90's?

I don't think I can narrow it down to a year, I love too many albums across the last 25 years.

I am lame though, I have never cared for a lot of the earliest metal in the 80s. A lot of good genres were pioneered in the early days but a lot of the pioneering stuff is boring as hell or sloppy or just uninteresting after growing up with the more refined stuff that came later. I like very few albums from those really early days with some notable exceptions of course. I dont even like early to mid 80s Metallica.

Metal started getting great in the early-mid 90s for me and kept getting better with your usual ups and downs each year.

Too hard to choose a year...

I know, I should fakk off and go listen to Limp Bizkit for being untrvv. :)

So I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible for me to determine my favourite year in metal...I have however narrowed it down to three choices.
I also did not look at the last ten years between 2005-2015 as I do not think enough time has passed yet to truly determine the lasting value of albums released within that timespan.

Let's start with 1984, the glorious year for true metal of steel!

Anthrax - Fistful of Metal
Armored Saint - March of the saint
Bathory - Bathory
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Cirith Ungol - King of the dead
Dio - The Last in Line
Exciter - Violence and force
Grave Digger - heavy metal breakdown
Grim reaper - See you in hell
Helstar - Burning Star
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction
Judas Priest - Defenders of the faith
Manowar - Hail to england
Manowar - Sign of the hammer
Medieval steel - medieval steel
Mercyful Fate - Don't break the oath
Metal Church - Metal Church
Metallica - Ride the lightning
Pretty Maids - Red, hot and heavy
Running Wild - Gates to purgatory
Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus
Saxon - Crusader
Slayer - Haunting the chapel
Sodom - In the sign of evil
The Rods - Let them eat metal
Twisted Sister - Stay hungry
Van Halen - 1984
W.A.S.P. - W.A.S.P.
Warlock - Burning the witches

Then we have 1992. While not a year for as great a number of classics as other years of the early ninties four of my personal all time favourite albums were still released this year.

Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer
Blind Guardian - Somewhere far beyond
Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade
Burzum - Burzum
Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the mutilated
Darkthrone - A blaze in the northern sky
Danzig - III How the gods kill
Deicide - Legion
Dismember - Pieces
Edge of Sanity - Unorthodox
Hypocrisy - Penetralia
Iced Earth - Night of the stormrider
Immortal - Diabolical Fullmon Mysticism
Liers in Wait - Spiritually Uncontrolled Art
Malevolent Creation - Retribution
Manowar - The Triumph of steel
Merciless - The Treasures Within
Motörhead - March ör die
Rage against the machine - Rage against the machine (As a kid I liked them)
Seance - Fornever Laid To Rest
Unleashed - Shadows in the deep
Vader - the ultimate incantation
W.A.S.P. - The Crimson idol

Then finally we have 2002. A shitload of great albums, most of whom I still listen to, were released back then. If you would force me at gunpoint to choose just one year then this would probably be it.

Amon Amarth - Vs the world
Bathory - Nordland
Behemoth - Zos kia cultos
Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal
Blind Guardian - A night at the opera
Bloodbath - Resurrection through carnage
Cannibal Corpse - Gore Obsessed
Deströyer 666 - Cold Steel...for an iron age
Dio - Killing the dragon
Doomsword - Resound the horn
Gospel of the horns - A call to arms
Halford - Crucible
Hammerfall - Crimson Thunder
Immortal - Sons of northern darkness
Immolation - Unholy Cult
Insision - Beneath the folds of flesh
Kaamos - Kaamos
Malign - Divine Facing
Manowar - Warriors of the world
Manowar - The Dawn of battle

Necrophobic - Bloodhymns
Nightwish - Century Child
Nile - In Their Darknened Shrines
Running Wild - The Brotherhood
Satyricon - Volcano
Thunderstone - Thunderstone
Thyrfing - Vansinnesvisor
Tyr - How far to asgaard
Vader - Revelations

Honourable mentions are 1980 and 1986.

Yeah, not remotely possible for me. Far too many years with great offerings, and the ones with smaller amounts could likely be amped up with I put in the time to listen to more released at the time.
