Zakk Wylde was the onstage guitarist for James Durbin's American Idol performance of "Heavy Metal" tonight. I'm amazed that metal is getting such mainstream exposure.

No kidding, what a great surprise! Didn't see a lot of :headbang: in the crowd, so hopefully mainstream America gets it. Was a solid performance by Durbin I thought.

I don't think he's exceptional. He's fine, but his voice isn't distinct. Still, cool that a Judas Priest and now Hagar song have been on American Idol this season.

But Lusk and Abrams are simply better.

I agree, both are supremely talented. However, Jacob's operatic tendencies grate on me a bit.

I thought they guys was off on most of his notes. I thought he sounded horrible. He could hit high notes, and that's cool, but not if he's not hitting the right notes.

Exactly. Personally I think Durbin sucks. Period.
I love how people think just because Zakk Wylde appeared on IDOL (for I am sure a large fee), that metal will now have some mainstream acceptance.

Furthermore, what's even more ironic, is that if any of your fav bands got that exposure most would jump ship on them anyhow.

Difference of opinion, I guess. I didn't think he was pitch perfect on the the Hagar tune, but I was very impressed with his You've Got Another Thing Coming performance.

As far as mainstream exposure for my favorite bands, I am pragmatic. If it helps them sell records and make a mortgage payment, I hope all of my favorite bands can get that sort of break. Assuming of course that they don't water things down for TV consumption!

Durbin is great if you like "metal" karaoke....personally, I think he's just a wannabe. Outside his "Ripper" Owens type screams, he's really not too great a singer. Same thing with Casey....he may be a decent musician, but vocally, he's barely passable.

Scotty SHOULD win that thing, but everyone is going to feel bad the remainder of the season for Pia, so Lauren will receive the honors this year.

I think Steven Tyler is going to drop dead one week from his never ending hard-on for Haley. Damn, he rapes her with his beaty little eyes every week!

I'm pulling for James, only because he's the first person in the history of the show to come out and say "hey, I like singing heavy metal, and there's nothing wrong with that."

Sure, the show has had "rockers" like Bo Bice and Daughtry, but nothing where they would push the boundaries of the show and do some classic metal screaming for a while.

James has been really smart with his choices too. He'll do the Beatles, and when he did Bon Jovi, he sang I'll Be There For You, rather than something heavier like GNR (which also came out that year)

Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again...Durbin is a shitty version of Adam Lambert. I doubt anyone will EVER come close to the sheer brilliance of Lambert's vocal talent on that show.

Too bad Adam then put out a pretty poor album that barely reflected what he did on the show.

While I won't say he's a completely shitty vocalist he's not that great. Karaoke metal is what I call it. I think it's good he's singing those songs, but I am not a big fan of the performances. His high register is good but other than that, very inconsistent. Everyone praised his Priest cover and I HATED it. Randy and Jennifer may not be used to his types of vocals, so that might be why they like it but I'm astounded that Tyler thinks he's a good rock/metal singer unless it's simply him liking the fact that he's just doing it instead of pop.

As far as the past rock contestants I still enjoyed Bo Bice the most. It's unfortunate that from what I heard, he sort of went crazy/had a breakdown.

I disagree - I think it takes a degree of stepping back and realizing that his voice isn't going to sound just like Halford, or Sammy Hagar, or any other metal singer. So it will naturally sound like karoake to metal fans, and if we compare him to our favorite metal singers, he won't stand a chance.

James has his own sound, which I think is very similar element to 80's heavy metal singers. It's that big, powerful, soaring higher register, and I love the fact that he's not afraid to go on Idol and promote heavy metal music and sing the way he wants to sing.

The show has really stayed away from showcasing singers that want to sing in a heavier, more aggressive style, and I'm loving every second of it this year.
