Zeitgeist

On the topic of knowing SFA about religion, I'm currently reading (ie, just started) "The Bible, The Biography" which - in the first 40 pages at least - has opened my eyes a great deal on how the Hebrew bible (old testament) came to be. Should be an interesting read, fo sho.

I'm watching this at the moment. Have watched the first part on religion. While it may be correct as they assert that the Christian faith is an "astrotheological literary metaphor" the links and assumptions that they make are somewhat dubious. Almost anything they put up as evidence in the form of text moves too quickly to read.

I like the part in which they talk of the Vatican in an "we all know what happened after they came to power" sort of tone, The Dark Ages blah di blah di blah. At times these guys take an incredibly narrow view, narrower than the views they claim to be enlightening.

Part 2 on 9/11 is more convincing, though again their style is somewhat cheap. Using repeated sound clips of the words 'explosion' and 'terrorism' as well as bombarding the viewer with distressing scenes does little to support an objective viewpoint. Despite this, I'm finding it more difficult to point out flaws in their method or reasoning, nor do I know enough about it to know if they are telling porkies.

Documentaries trouble me, because, while they can be interesting, entertaining and thought provoking; for the average viewer it is very difficult to check or critique the credentials of the producers of a film, their sources or their techniques.

The authoritative style of the narration is also troubling and employs the same sorts of rhetoric used by the neo-cons they appear to be opposing, the whole "we don't know if we're right, we hope we're wrong, but goddamn... what if we are right?" approach.

Also, the number of people they had making comments and statements throughout (particularly when using secondary sources) that were un-named and not introduced in anyway reminded me too much of Today Tonight.

Yeah, like Al Gore (inconvenient truth) and his "lights on" approach at home.

Thats not a doctor:loco:

Too many leaps of faith and contradictions for me in this one. It makes a good story though. I'd be tempted to believe it just for fun and form some sort of resistance movement. Maybe that's what 'they' want me to do.

here's some nice use of 9/11 samples by the group Tactical Sekt. It should be noted they are not metal and the vocals have been removed and this video has not been made by the band.
