Zoroaster - Zoroaster
Battle Kommand Records - BKR012 - 11th July 2006
By Paul Raw Nerve
Five songs. 33 minutes. Battle Kommand Records. Dark and well laid out artwork.
This all boded well for a fantastic record, especially after hearing just the first few seconds of 'Mons Venus' which sets the scene of Zoroaster's sludgy, gnarly, nasty, fuzzed up approach which gets a pretty strong production (although if anything does, it's the production that lets things down). It's not until 150 seconds in that the first riff changes and what a riff that comes in. This opener is an 8 minute sludge treat and is a pointer for the shape of the rest of the CD, which manages to keep such a standard going.
Think Floor meets Corrupted given a Buzz: Oven style makeover. The vocals aren't quite as nasty as Corrupted but they are along those lines. 'Honey and Salt' is the track though, reminding me of the mighty 'Raw Curtains' by Goatsnake, or more towards the speed of Grief or the really difficult works of the previously mentioned bands.
On the press release it says 'Behold the mighty debut of one of the most promising doom acts that the UK has to offer'. I think they might be right.
7/10
