Zuul FX – Live Free Or Die

Zuul FX are a French four piece who err on the heavier side of metal-core with the occasional electronic embellishment to give the songs a modern sheen a la Fear Factory. Having been championed on their previous album By The Cross by such metal giants as Bruce Dickinson, the band are back with their latest offering Live Free Or Die.

This album is strong in most areas but lacks its own identity to make it an out and out hit. Sure the drums are tight, the guitars sound very thick and heavy and the vocalist sounds as angry as a man with a hornet's nest wedged up his arse but where the hell are the songs?! It all just sounds a bit metal by numbers to me and while 7 years ago this might have been cutting edge, the standard has improved so much recently that Zuul FX need to go and look at what sets them apart from other bands and really hone that sound to perfection. They certainly have the potential and ambition for something brilliant but at the moment I would conclude that this album doesn't deliver.
