Just how is drumming composed? Other than a Denis or Kermin, for example, how much or little input do drummers have? You read on some liner notes that drums were added a continent away. I'm sure the drummer's status plays a role, and of course the music genre.
I love involved drums and or other percussion in my tunes. Doesn't necessarily have to be fast, in fact I think it must be incredibly difficult to provide pleasing texture in a fast metal piece. Tremendous respect towards Chris Quirarte and Asgeir Mickelson for example. Progressive music, fast or slow, has a ton of room within its compositions for percussive expression.
While listening to or watching a performance of what I perceive is yawning percussive output, I get the impression the drummer must be contemplating the cost benefit analysis of deep- sixing the composer.
Does the Composer really do it all ? Is there a dearth of drum talent or are drummers often the second class citizens of the music world?
Thanks in advance,
