Happy 4th of July to all the Americans on this board.

If I may indulge a bit- I have a hard times these days with the 4th of July and America in general- especially with all of the false and mindless patriotism that our country has shown since Sep 11. I am getting sick of fat old Women and Men driving around with flags on their cars- stating that we should go to war with everyone- that America is the best country- that everything in America is alright- It seems the media has bought into this trend recently as well. It just disgusts me- does flying a flag, and accepting everything AMerican without question- make one a patriotic person? Or is it more patriotic to question your country and its direction- to ask how things can get better? Im happy to be American- but I really dont feel the need to wear a ridiculous american flag shirt today- and lavish praise on my government.

Bump on that. Very well said. I like America and am proud to be American; but there are many things about the current administration and America's foreign policy that I don't approve of.

This might have been more approriate in the chat section, but the post is here......

Loving your country is not the same thing as loving your government. Most of my favorite bands (don't ask me why as I don't know) are German, but you would have to drag me kicking and screaming to pull me out of Alabama, much less the USA to live anywhere else.
The current government of my country does not define how I am as far as being patriotic. My wife is 100% pure Japanese and has been here (in America) for only 6 years, but she would give her very life for America just as I would if I had to.
With all it's problems, there is no country in the world with a richer mix of cultures, and financial opportunities than the United States of America. I am not saying that America is "better" than any other country, but I know I am proud to be an American. I honor the balls that our fore-fathers had to declare this fledgeling country as independent and free on this day two hundred and twenty seven years ago.

Let me buy your ticket to Cuba, okay?!

This is why America is great. You can disagree with Government & you don't have to worry about getting "offed" for having those opinions.
If Bush does get re-elected, I'll chip in for a bus ticket to Canada.
Look me up, after the next election....:p

That would still be better than Bush's America. Shit, Bengledesh would be preferable. They'll proably be richer than this country if everyone just let's him have his fucking way.

Anyway, I'm thinking either Japan or Amsterdam. Canada will probably be the only option though, as by the time Bush's first term is over I'll be too poor to go anywhere else.

Actually, now that I think about it, I don't really understand this concept of being "proud to be an American"? Tell me, how is it that anyone can take pride in something that they had nothing to do with the creation of? Are you all proud of your races too? How about your hair? Your sexual orientation?

I'm not going anywhere, but I am not happy at all with Bush. I would be lying my ass off if I said I was not a "conservative" as liberals make big government that just annoy people and spend useless money, but I think big George needs to give "W" a spanking or something. He sucks.
Want to hear something funny ? I am not Christian (by any stretch of the imagination) but I think Pat Robertson (The 700 Club host/preacher guy) might have been th most intelligent Presidential candidate in my lifetime. I normally have the stereotypical view that hard-core Christians are kind of followers and/or dumb-asses, but that dude is freaking sharp as a nail. I wish Ozzy would move next to him, like he did to Pat Boone and de-convert him. Pat Robertson has more brains than I do beer bottles in my city's landfill.

"When I said during my presidential bid that I would only bring Christians and Jews into the government, I hit a firestorm. `What do you mean?' the media challenged me. `You're not going to bring atheists into the government? How dare you maintain that those who believe in the Judeo-Christian values are better qualified to govern America than Hindus and Muslims?' My simple answer is, `Yes, they are.'"
--Pat Robertson, "The New World Order," page 218

"[The] feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."
--Pat Robertson, fundraising letter, 1992

"You say you're supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense. I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist."
--Pat Robertson, The 700 Club, January 14, 1991

"Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history."
--Pat Robertson in a 1993 interview with Molly Ivins

"Many of those people involved with Adolph Hitler were Satanists, many of them were homosexuals--the two things seem to go together."
--Pat Robertson, "The 700 Club," 1/21/93

"I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period."
--Pat Robertson, newsletter as quoted by Federal News Service, Sept. 11, 1992

"The key in terms of mental ability is chess. There's never been a woman Grand Master chess player. Once you get one, then I'll buy some of the feminism..."
--Pat Robertson
[NOTE: According to the Chess Federation of the U.S. there were already two women Grand Masters at that time, both from Georgia. Since Robertson's gaffe, three more women became Grand Masters]

[On Planned Parenthood]
"It is teaching kids to fornicate, teaching people to have adultery, every kind of bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism-everything that the Bible condemns."
--Pat Robertson, "The 700 Club," 4/9/91

[On Gay Day at Disney World]
"I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you, This is not a message of hate; this is a message of redemption. But a condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It'll bring about terrorist bombs; it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes and possibly a meteor."
--Pat Robertson, "The 700 Club" June 6, 1998

"I think we ought to close Halloween down. Do you want your children to dress up as witches? The Druids used to dress up like this when they were doing human sacrifice... [Your children] are acting out Satanic rituals and participating in it, and don't even realize it."
--Pat Robertson, "The 700 Club," 10/29/82

... ect, ect...

Sounds like a GREAT leader to me

Somebody get a fire extinguisher...
I sense a flame war coming on.

btw, I am a Christian, and I say fuck Pat Robertson.
It's people like him who misrepresent the religion and turn others against it. Also, what he says about Druids is bullshit. I'm Irish, so it's part of my heritage (Druids were ancient Celts) and I resent his uneducated, slanderous remarks.

I voted for Nader.

As I stated in my post, I wish Ozzy would move next to him and de-convert him. Most of his views I disagree with, but you could write a page six miles long and it won't change my mind about his intellect. I don't even care for the guy personally, I just respect his intellect tremendously. He is absolutely brilliant, even if he is tainted by his extremely conservative Christian beliefs. I didn't cast my vote for him for things like you stated, but I wish that someone as sharp as he without the religious baggage would emerge from the depths of politics.
