I think bars and places that host open mics and such pay royalties to record companies which allows people who play there to play covers and still get paid. Or something like that.

If you're not making money off covering an Opeth song, you don't need to pay them, but you should say, "Hey, this is an Opeth song." If you wanted to make money from your cover, then you would have to contact their management, get permission, pay them, etc.

Roger's singing was rather lousy (no wonder they didn't do "Hey You"!), but he played bass well and looked genuinely excited to be there. Great performance. I liked Richard Ashcroft and Coldplay doing "Bittersweet Symphony," too, but Floyd was king.
