Depends what one defines as underground. I'd guess that Black Sabbath are probably 'overground', so to speak, along with Metallica. So... Erm... Possibly Cradle of Filth? Or maybe Stormtroopers of Death.

The first death metal song I heard was Deicide's 'Sacrificial Suicide', which I downloaded (using Napster, no less :) ) during my first year of uni. I wasn't too keen on it to begin with, but then it grew on me. Nowadays, death metal isn't my favourite genre, though I do like a fair bit of it...

I like Darkthrone. The first album I bought was 'Under a Funeral Moon', and it took me a while to get into it, being so raw and all :) But after a while I began to appreciate the style a lot more. As for the politics/racism thing, I don't care what the views of the musicians are, so long as...

I quite like them, though not in a major way. Anselmo does come across as being a tit sometimes, though.

Definitely agree with 'Chaos AD' and 'Spreading the Disease', though I didn't realise either of them were underrated. Although 'Spreading the Disease' isn't actually available in the UK except as import, which is incredibly silly. I think the same is true of 'Persistence of Time'.
