A New Dawn are worth checking out. They're a gothic/metal/thrash band with progressive elements that has two female lead singers and a growler (who was also female up until a lineup change in late 2008).

Actually I think that was the point of the person(s) who came up with the rules - it was poking fun at the many female fronted gothic/symphonic/power/progressive metal bands coming out of Europe who are clones of/inspired by those bands. Think about it - how many of these type of female fronted...

I'm not too familiar with Katatonia but based on what I've heard of them, Temujin is a band that you might also like.

Try A New Dawn, Queensryche, Vanishing Point, Black Majesty, Nightwish, Masterplan, and if you're into the symphonic metal with female vocals - Within Temptation, Transentience.

Would your aversion to "80's wailing style" extend to operatic female vocalists fronting gothic/progressive metal? If not, A New Dawn are worth checking out. Otherwise, perhaps Korpiklaani, Finnish folk metal, may fit the bill Or Australian prog metal band Vanishing Point

I'm not sure if other bands have done these things before but if not a couple of innovative bands are: A New dawn - Gothic/Progressive metal with two female lead singers and a growler which leads to some great vocal harmonies; Korpiklaani - mixing Finnish folk with metal.
