1 + 1.0 = 1!!!

i read once an equation which led you to an absurd result; that was indeed quite nice and elaborate (the mistake was simple, though: you can't add before multiplying).
but this one is just nonsense :err:

umm........... yeah, thats definately WRONG. 1+0.2+0.2 definately does not equal 1+0.2. and 1+0.2 certainly doesn't equal 1, etc..... I sincerely hope you were joking with this.
 
I don't understand that one. I have another one:

We have this equation:
x = y
Now, we subtract y on both sides
x - y = y - y
Now, we divide both sides by (x - y)
(x - y)/(x - y) = (y - y)/(x - y)
1 = 0

But there is a little mistake...
 
Well yes, since x = y then x - y must be 0, and anything divided by 0 will be infinity. So: infinity = infinity... blimey. :p

I'm quite pleased I spotted that one, I was always naff at that stuff in maths. I hope it's right after all this...
 
you're right. Well, when i divided by zero it was 0/0, which is not infinity necessarily, it's an indetermination. But that was the mistake.
