Spartan is an obvious reference to the Spartan race of Ancient Greece, whom were seen as intellectually and morally backward in light of the achievements of Athens but they were fearsome warriors. Lenina Huxley also references Lenina from Huxleys book, Brave New World, which has obvious parallels with the movie.
