2015 Symphony X Album News

"It was about the progression of the whole record. It speeds up here and then it dips down here. It all makes sense together, it all works together and it all flows together."
Sounds pretty interesting to me.
Not a fan of the cover art; but who cares in this day and age.

I love that they've put the masks front and center, but the album cover is pretty terrible. I love the idea of it, but the execution reminds me of Maiden's Dance of Death.

Everything they've said about the album makes me really excited, despite the generic song titles. I'm pumped. Just bought my tickets for Chicago, as well!

Dude, NOTHING is as bad as that. And I'm not quite seeing the comparison. Just because it has that star-shaped symbol in the center? It's certainly very minimalist, but I don't have any immediate complaints with it.

As for the song titles, I have to agree. Most of them sound pretty lame, on top of 8 - 10 being directly lifted from 3 other pretty popular bands (I know it's not exactly a new thing for multiple bands to have songs with identical titles, but come on). Still, I'll reserve any judgement till I hear a single. Based on what Romeo says, I'm cautiously optimistic all the same.

According to last.fm we've got some tracklengths

I searched all over last.fm and couldn't find anything about that. Could you maybe provide a link to where exactly you saw that? Or did they just take it down really quickly?

What you can do is search for the songs on last.fm. Reviewers have promo copies of the album already, and last.fm lists tracklengths for each of the tracks.

This is usually accurate unless the first person that listened to the promo didn't listen to a song all the way through, so the initial length gets recorded as really short. My guess is these times are pretty accurate because they add up to almost 66 minutes on the dot, and we all know how MJR likes to time everything perfectly.

Ah, okay. And didn't they do the whole 66 minutes thing on PL? I remember the inside of the booklet says the album is exactly 66 minutes and 6 seconds.

I guess my comparison comes from the concept being very cool, but the realized version being laden with poor 90's CGI work. Also, the masks.

I have come to the conclusion that SymX just like cheesy mid-90s video game CGI. It's definitely part of their aesthetic at this point, and it's kind of cool.

A fun thing could have been to just make each of the 9 symbols different covers, and the collectors would just buy 9 albums each. Easy money for Nuclear Blast. The rest of us just get to pick the one we like the most.

Well, let's expect the 90's cgi work comes with 90's quality Symphony X songwriting. "Don't judge a book by its cover".

On the other hand, Romeo didn't say a thing about the lyrics, but what else can we expect when an album about "Hell" contain "kiss", "fire", "darkest", "hell" on the title tracks... I'm already training to sing "from shooooooreee tooooooo shooooooorrrrrrrawh!" once again!

New album based on works by Dante Aligierhi (fave!), and a concert the day after my birthday! Whoop whoop! First excitement about an album in three long years. Love album cover, love basis for lyrics, love the scavenger hunts for the hidden treats in the songs........my money is on this for best album ever. SX has turned me into a music snob; all others are judged by the bar they set. Word.

Please, please, please - tell me Russ actually sings on this album intead of screaming, or 'rough' vocals, or whatever the hell it's called. I hope he's gotten that out of his system with AMob and can back to what he does best. And, for God's sake, how about bringing back the 'symphony' in Symphony X, instead of the 'me too' nu-metal stuff. Sorry, I'm a little cranky today and the last 2 albums were just not up to par with V or even The Odyssey.

I was never disappointed with their works,of course I preferir the old ones but
I think they can satisfy their fans even trying doing something new in their style, I'm expecting another good work, they're the only metal band in which I can trust and I'm looking forward to seeing again in italy

One of the most surprising things is that on their 9th album, an album loosely inspired by Dante's Inferno, the 9th track isn't a 9 minute song (called Nine) about the 9 circles of hell. What gives, Romeo?

NEW SONG!!!!!!!

First impressions: real singing! It sounds a lot like Iconoclast/Paradise Lost, but with more heart. That bluesy stomp jam that happens towards the end is really nice. Call me crazy, but the melodies and vocals remind me a little bit of Dream Theater.

Nice! Just made my Friday completely better. That was a heck of a ferocious song that was for me instantly better than Serpent's Kiss or End of Innocence. Great to hear Russell singing the vast majority of the track. Solo seemed to noodle a bit but just listened to it the one time. The fret work during the chorus' was pretty awesome though. Also agree on the stomp at the end, that was a lot of fun.
