5 ways electronics retailers are screwing you

All stuff I already knew, but very well put. The ink cartridge one really gets me... for the same price as a full set of ink cartridges you can buy a new printer which comes with them. Sickening.

pretty great article. I had a pretty awful experience that is related that I'll share.

My lady friend needed a new laptop for school, so I went to walmart and got her one of those netbooks by HP. As I'm buying the laptop the sales guy asked me if I wanted to get the extended warranty to cover "most wear and tear". Specifically he told me that I should get it, because a few of the HPs have a problem with the display failing. I ended up getting it.

Less then 4 days later, the display failed, with half of it going black. Went into walmart to return it, they refused saying I "stood" on the laptop and that's why they screen failed. I explained to them about their sales person explaining the warranty specifically covering this and that I had paid and extra 60 dollars because of it. The manager was called in, which clearly had a speech planned for when this happens. An hour of complaining and yelling and arguing and I end up leaving empty handed. I filed a complaint with the BBB, and received little help.

The laptop ended up becoming essentially a desktop with an external display. 3 weeks later, the keyboard failed. At this point I'm livid and called HP. Again they claim that I spilt something in the laptop and refused to honor my warranty.

Long story short, watch out for these places. HP and walmart will never get another dollar of my money.

They said you stood on it? You have got to be joking man. That just sounds crazy to me. Do they have proof or a fucking photo of you doing this...they are obligated to replace the thing just from you buying the warranty, sue em if they don't.
