oh 50 watt 800's are beasts - i used one in college for 2 years, a MKIII High Gain or something like that. it was a killer amp and there was no foot switch for the thing so it was constantly stuck in metal mode! it rocked! shame about the cab though, straight 10 x 4 cheapy marshall.

Hard to top those old 50w high gain 800s with the Drake transformers. Try throwing a RAT pedal in front of one... classic Carcass.

I feel that 100W keep the bass much more focused than 50W amps do, guess thats a headroom thing? Cranked 50W can tend to sound a bit mushy in the low end.

That being said I just ordered a 50W amp for myself today.

That's the classic result of power amp saturation (a.k.a. high volume), so yes, a headroom thing.
