First post!

Ok, I'm about to go into a studio for our first full production record. For amps we had a 5150 and a JSX. So we decided to get rid of the amps and try something new. One got a 5150 II(not much difference) but the other got a mesa boogie triple rec. Both through mesa cabs. So basically what i'm asking, what amp should be used for what (fast trill, chugging, breakdowns, clean riffs, melodic stuff...) do you think? You can go to our myspace page you check it out and get a feel for the tunes... www.myspace.com/sotreum

Any help would be apreeshed!

Hi & Welcome,

Concerning your question, how about going with what sounds better to you ? Tone is subjective and really only your ears will know what it likes between the two. Depending what guitar, pups, strings, cables etc... that you're using will affect the outcome...

but thats just my 2 cents & good luck with the quest!!

joe.

sold a 5150 for a 5150II??o_O

both great amps, I prefer the recto for more chordy-stuff and whenever you need that wall, but I have some problems with it sometimes with singlestring things (it's sometimes (depending on player) difficult to find the balance between too much gain for chords and not enough for singlestring (feels like you're playing a rubberband instead of a guitarstring then.....right Gavin? ;))

so for everything like singlestrings, fast palmmuted thrashy- stuff I prefer the 5150..

the combination of both amps is gorgeous though, go with that!

but....
if you're going into a studio:
let the engineer/producer/whatever guy there decide, he probably knows better!
you're job is the playing, his job is the sound

Thanks for all the sugggestions!

As far as guitars go we are using an ESP MH-1000 with emg 81-85, Ibanez s520ex with emg 81 bridge, schecter omen 6 with emg 81 bridge.

We're definatly going to use both, but we just want to know what for what ahead of time. we think the 5150II for most rythm stuff and the recto for all the "lead" stuff as well as all the clean. We are doing a pre production next month so that will help alot too.

Thanks for all the help!!!

Use both for rhythm- two tracks of each. Pretty sure that's what peeps mean by combining them. For lead I've heard great tone from both- use whichever you can dial in to sound best for your tastes.

according to me, as said before, for rythm guitars, use both. but use only one guitar as LSD said. also, if you can, use only 1 guitarist, it will be tighter.

and for lead guitars, try the Mesa, it sounds really good.

when trying to get a lead sound out of the mesa i recomend the vintage mode. just boost the gain a bit on it and it really wails. i hate the lead tone out of modern. its really meant for heavy rhythm IMO not searing leads.

vintage tries to be more like the mark series which are famous for their leads tones. believe me i have a mark iv and no matter what anyone says there is no better lead tone anywhere in the world. period.

lol, so much for subjectivity
