First post... umm yeah.. bit of a noob..
I am not an engineer I am a guitarist..
and my band is starting tracking in our newly built studio..
(we are using all the necassery equipment..)

now.. we have been messing around with SM57 mic placements..
and we are just about there but we are confused on to what exact volume the guitar needs to be on the RHYTHM channel to record with that and how much gain you can get away with without it being sloppy but still able to do some phat ass pinches :P .. but yeah I know you guys will know way more than I do.. so if you could give me some settings for volumes and stuff that you may have used from previous experience you would be really helping us out!!

the setup is:

Peavey 5150II (No pedals) (should I use NS2 or OD/TS-808?)
Marshall 1960B 4 X 12 Cab

we are monitoring through Logic Pro and I can't remember the name of the interface we are using but if I can remember my drummer saying its good.

Cheers guys!

Matty

P.S we won't be mixing with this setup as we are getting John Mitchell to do his thang.. (he did drums with us) (Architects/Sylosis)

Hey mate, havent got the mark 2, I have a 5150 and a 6505+ so I suppose I will be close. With volume wise, I like to see the speaker move on chugs, so on my amps that is usually around 3. On both I like to keep the resonance maxed and the presence at least on 9, as it seems to really open the amp up.
As for gain, i suppose it depends on your pre amp tubes, but on mine, I run the gain on 6 on lower volumes, and as I get up around 3 on the volume, I usually turn the gain down to around 3. This is used in conjunction with a maxon 808, with gain around 9 oclock, level around 12 oclock at least and the tone at around 10 oclock, which tightens things up a lot. Hope this helps.:)

Oh and as for mic placement, I like to have the diameter of the 57 inside the dustcap, slightly off centre amd within an inch of the grill.

5150mkII is EXACTLY the same amp as the 6505+
5150mkI is EXACTLY the same amp as the 6505
so give him your + settings :D

The last album I recorded I used a 5150 and Ibanez TS9 + Mesa Oversized V30.
Overdrive pedal gives a brighter tone to the amp and a more agressive distortion, I love it! But if you don´t have a TS9 you can reach a good sound without it. My personal recommendation is to use lead ch, with a High pre, and a low Post, this will "compress" much more the preamp.
NS2, is not necessary if your guitar´s got good electronics....if it´s noisy, try it.
For Blacklist album I use the gear described above and thru the loop Rocktron Hush and BBe Maximizer. You can listen to a teaser here:

Good luck man!
