A new Black Metal FAQ

Well, he certainly made an interesting comparison between the season winter and the current state of BM. However, I think it was a little long-winded, and I don't agree with even half of his views. At least, I think, the gist of it is hoping for a wonderful BM future from the next generation of players and not to give up on BM because it is only in its adolescence or something.

One thing that bothers me: Prozak very eloquently asserts that content is more important than form, but he also makes it quite clear that he regards verse/bridge/chorus songwriting as a symptom of decline. It seems that in prozakology, style is not important, except when it is.

Eh. Song structure is very much "content" rather than "form" as it directly pertains to the substance of music rather than its aesthetic. Content is everything that there would be should you write down notes of the music and the lyrics on paper. "Form" is style of playing instruments, recording techniques, mixing, production... The way the music is presented.

I see. That makes more sense.

Sorry kiddies, adding growled vocals to music of basic pop sensibilities is just not enough to make it death metal. Neither is adding growled vocals to would be if it could be "prog."
Beautiful.
As true as that may be, the tone and vague manner in which that is directed seems more like a cheap shot than something that should appear in a 'respectable' FAQ. Nevertheless, the point remains that the new BM one far exceeds the older one.

It does, but I thought Prozak was using the term "form" as referring to song structure, i.e. linear form, sonata form, rondo form, etc. What Erik is referring to was, I thought, the term "style" itself. The presentation. It could very well be that "form" is used to denote both.

That was exactly my point. How it went from objective points to the sort of inane cheap shots you would find in this forum.

Form is structure though. :/ It's pretty obvious by their denotations. Aesthetic is different from form.
