A question for Mikael

just because the song is 20 minutes doesnt mean it's their best song. Opeth could probably write a 60 minute song and call it an album. I dont really care if they make another epic song like that, as long as the albums are a good length...
and BTW, i havent seen mikeal post here in a while, he's a busy man

I dont understand why its so special with a long track.
The only think who makes "Black Rose" to a 20 minutes long is that its the same Lyrics and just one track. They could have cut it into three songs and people would have seen it as three different songs. I will not call Black Rose for a long song, just a long track that just havent been divided.

I like long songs. *g*

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness for Example is a very great song. :)

I think a 2 minute song can not have an atmosphere as the most Opeth songs have.

check out COC's "Without Wings" and tell me it doesn't have any atmosphere  .....the song is a instrumental masterpiece yet it doesn't even clock 2 minutes....

Honestly , lenght within songs does not make them good or bad ....it's just how they're done ....i thought that was common knowledge by now

Listen here Hearse, the fact that Black Rose Immortal is a long song does not make it automatically 'the best'. However the fact is BRI just happens to flow incredibily well, is very melodic and beautiful and in my opinion has the best riffs on Morningrise.

As for dividing BRI into 3 songs...thats a dumb idea, it really fits together well and has a clear structure when your ponder over it for ages.

So, Hearse, I agree that melody makes the song, not length, but short songs are definately less engaging. Only so much can be done in 2 mins, BRI can do 10 times over what a short song could do, and no matter how good a short song is it would simply not contain as varied or interesting material due to its length. Personally, the best thing about long songs is the fact you get to figure out how it all fits together, whether it 'flows', it has a start progressing to a climax and come down, and most importantly whether it can keep your attention.

Short songs have less staying power, and are easier to lose interest in due to their lack of progressing, varied material.

I don't agree.
20 minutes is imho too much.
15 is ok.

Okay, but I look at it this way: If I can sit through 15 minutes, five more won't kill me, especially if it's Opeth calliber.

Sorry guys I'm going to have to go with Kush on this one...

I mean not once did I hear him say that there was anything not special about short songs all he said was the he wanted to have one long one. And there is an undeniable difference between a song and an epic. Mikael I think has the ability to make an interesting enough epic and do it with lots of uhmm.. epicness? I'm all for a long song... bring on the epics!

Rock on, Beavis! Good call!

Anyone remember back before BWP's release? They stated that The title track was supposed to be an Eighteen minute epic or something. I've always wondered what happened with that.

And longer songs do not equal better songs, but good long songs are better than good short ones.

This chat reminds me of a Floyd song, I think it was called 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'. On the original vinyl, It covered a whole side. But when it was re-released, it was broken into 7 parts. Shame really, that spoiled the song.

To me, Black Rose Immortal is NOT the greatest song because of its great length...that is unquestionably redundant reasoning. I mean, plain & simple...this song has the finest melodies I have ever heard done by guitar (electric or acoustic) and like one has said earlier, the song flows perfectly from one exquisite part to the next. It never drags on, like some songs of this length surely would...it just someone kicks ass all the way through.

Though, because of BRI's length, you are treated to so many incredible musical moments...BRI is the greatest!

Depends on the song, I guess. If they do a 25 minute song that's good the whole way through, then that's good. If they do one that's boring and stupid, then it'll be boring and stupid.

Great logic, I know.
