A question...

Who do you fucking think you are, asking a question like that ?

Playing a riff you like doesn't mean you get the riff. Do you feel "enlightened" or something ?

The real difference is "listening to" and "hearing" music...which isn't always tightly related to the fact that you're playing an instrument or not.

Damn man! Dont you know ppl who play, who got into a certain type of music, or a certain cd, just becouse the instrements?

You should've started this thread in a different way.

You wonder why people who don't play an instrument are into metal cos you got into it because you were already playing an instrument.

I was actually wondering the opposite :
Why don't people who don't play an instrument have that urge to play an instrument, after hearing music they like.

Did I even say that I PLAYED an instrument, dickhead?? I am actually interested to know what draws people to metal (and no, it isn't JUST the playing for me. EG: i appreciate the playing in classical and jazz, but i don't like the music terribly much...!). It's a different thing for each person, and it means something different for each person.

You wonder why people who don't play an instrument are into metal cos you got into it because you were already playing an instrument.

Actually, i've been into metal since i was seven, so i can assure you that i was into metal before i started playing guitar...

Who do you fucking think you are, asking a question like that ?

...Who do i think I AM??? Who do you think you are, you little shit. I have been on this forum for over a year, and i was asking the question of -MY FREINDS- here, and by chance, you happened to scoot on in, and that's cool, but don't go stirring up bullshit, because you have no idea who i am.

The reason that i asked this question is because of a poll that was put up here ages ago on 'Who here plays and instrument', and to my surprise, there actually wasn't many people who played an instrument...

...And another thing.

You seem to have assumed from my post (Maybe my wording, maybe your ignorance...??) that i only appreciate metal because of the playing, but that is wrong. I like alot of non 'extreme' forms of playing, i like THE TEA PARTY, TOOL, etc. too, along with bands that are awesome players...

Music isn't just 'ENJOYMENT' or 'RELAXATION' to me, i have been listening to metal for more than half my life, and i have been playing guitar nearly that long too, so obviously we don't see eye-to-eye on this.

That's a really hard question to answer. Sometimes the sheer technical brilliance, sometimes the emotion, sometimes the heavy beat. I honestly couldn't say what draws me to metal, but it is the only form of music that has really spoken to me. Maybe it's because most metal musicians are about making music first and money second. But if that were the only reason, I'd also listen to a lot of other types of music. So, I guess it is a combination of all the aforementioned reasons. I didn't really understand why Smartass got so pissed by your question; it seemed like a good question to me.

Later.

the fact that in metal I find bands that convey very intense emotions in a way that can reach me, challenging, peotically beautiful lyrics that had thought put behind them, and all in all it was here that I first felt that music was art first, entertainment second.

and yeah, I just love that crunch!

and music is just entertainment folks :P

I'm not a true "musician" but I can play a few chords on guitar, play some bass, can keep simple time on drums, and finally sing songs all the way through. I've written words to, and came up with the music to 3 original songs (not complex though) and constantly write lyrics. I have ideas constantly and dream about songs, but I wish I had more training on any instrument (piano, guitar, bass, drums, etc...) I started "messing around with guitar when I was about 11. What drew me to metal/hard rock/ rock, etc... was Kiss. I got Destroyer when I was 5 and saw Kiss when I was 7 and was mesmerized by the guitar sound and theatrics. I was hooked since then. From the intro to "Detroit Rock City" and the darkness of "God of Thunder". Then I heard "Eruption" by Eddie Van Halen and was blown away at age 8. Next, I heard the great riffs of Tony Iommi and was "addicted' to the heavy guitar sound. It progressed from then on and I was a big fan of "cool guitar riffs. I love seeing music being performed live whether its country, bluegrass, blues, metal, hard rock, anything except rap because its "poetry" over samples unless a live band accompanies the "rapper" . Take care and cheers.

there are several things that got me into metal; the first being the influence of my friends ("here, listen to this"); the next was the station i WAS listening to goinn titties-up on me, so i started listening to 107.9, and when THAT went titties-up (it became a flipping R&B/RAP station!!!!!!) i changed to 100.7 WMMS, which is the current reigning deity of my radio. after that, it was just whatever struck my fancy.
but i have to say i like metal because the good stuff always has a specific emotion behind it. also, the good bands write all their own stuff (nevermore, prime example  ). i also relate to a lot of the lyrics in metal songs, so that has a big impact.
well, i guess that's it... there's probably more to it than that, but it's the kind of thing that you really can't put into words... music is the poetry of the soul.

true, i don't spend my entire life on this board, does that mean I can't react to an arrogant question ? Seemed like it wasn't intented the way it was written..well.. learn to express yourself cos you have to admit your thread comes across as being very snobbish.

Read it..I think you'll get my point.

Oh, and yes, I've been posting on this board and the previous one before...does it change the nature of this thread in any way ? no it doesn't.

Fuck you, buddy.

This isn't an 'English Grammar' forum. I'm sorry that you mistook what i wrote, but that's not my problem.

You admit that maybe you misread it, and that's cool, but no-one else has had this problem, so maybe it's just you?
