A theory.

The beginning to Advent would've been much more powerful if the drums were more powerful.
Advent remains to be the most powerfull song by Opeth. Changing it would lead to it's instant destruction.

I agree with most of the posts. I think the first 3 albums are perfect the way they were. As someone has already said, MFN would not have been interested in the demo material that Opeth put out. Just listen to Eternal Soul Torture.

Gunhaver, even Mikael says that the production on the first three was not nearly as good as on the most recent three (Still Life's was pretty good). Just listen. They're out of time at times on Orchid, the sound is fuzzy, the drums sound like machines. There is such thing as a better production job; if you can't hear how much better the production on Deliverance was then on Orchid, you don't have an ear for music.

Obviously the production of Deliverance is of a higher quality, but that doesn't necessarily make it better. If I had to choose a favourite between Orchid and Deliverance, there's no competition; Orchid.

The production may be of 'higher quality' on Deliverance, but that doesn't make it suiting. The thick, muddy, textured sound of MAYH blows the production of Deliverance out of the water.

Quit being an asshole, Gunhaver, and stop seeing things in black and white. By saying that I had Mike on my side, I didn't say we had to agree with everything he says. I was saying that, I think of all people, he'd have the best understanding. MAYH's sound suits MAYH as good as D1's sound suits D1. When you take the music out of the picture, D1's production job is of higher quality, but, of course, it doesn't have to be your favorite.

I'd say that, with a little help from Jesus they would of been able to be signed to Music-For-Nations.....I'm just trying to start trouble with the Jesus comment....

That's not even what Opeth are about (maximum exposure and being mainstream). That totally defeats the purpose of what they're doing, man. If you threw them onto the radio..how many people would "get it"? Not many. I think it's best the way it is, although the record label deal is quite sux. But you know, you have to admire their will to stick to their roots and their own views. They don't succumb to anything. I love that.

I like the people at their concerts in Houston.... "Man Opeth are like all fucking heavey and fucking shit, then they're all fucking mellow, and fuck man they're just like fucking great. Fuck dude I love them man they're fucking good" so I bet like the lovable stoner that said that, most people would get their music......j/k

Seriously, you can't find an objective solution to an inherently subjective question.

this is one of those threads thats alot like the womans question "does this make my ass look big?", no matter what you say, youre wrong and youre gonna get a shitstorm of abuse, oh well its amusing at least
