Active Monitor Shootout

i think both are too much for your 7ft. bedroom. there is also a 1500.00 dollar price difference(give or take) between the two. if i were you id get the dynaudio bm5as.

there's about a £100 difference over here.

We have Mackie HR824's and KRK RP-8's, as well as a recently acquired pair of ADAM Audio P22A's with ribbon tweeters (fucking sweet ). The 824's are some of the best monitors in the price range they offer them in. I have only read reviews of Dynaudio stuff, and it's either way at best. The 824's get good reviews across the boards. Based on reviews alone, I would take the 824's any day. I love the pair we have, indespensable.

The BM5A's are getting reviews like "best 'little brother' ever." and such. If I were you, with that small of a room, the BM5A's would be the ideal choice, or another pair with a smaller-than 8" woofer. You really don't realize how much low-end there will be, do you? Better build a set of bass traps while you're at it, or else you're headed for a trip to Mud City.

reviews are biased, i say screw reviews. its either advertising dollars talking or people who would defend what they bought to the death even if they hate it. dynaudios are great monitors and i hear alot of people who like them. i dont like the way mackies sound personally although i would never say they are bad or even not good quaulity. but dynaudio i think is a step up the monitor tier for sure. just my opinion though.

Meh, I'm speaking of reviews from people I trust and have very picky tastes. I wouldn't say "a step up in the monitor tier"....but moreso a pair of monitors that are really great for the price.

I'll never understand the hatred for the 824's...they are really great moni's and translate extremely well....not to mention the amount of low-end they can push out, eliminates the need for a dedicated sub-woofer in our room. Deemed pretty fucking flat in comparison to some other moni's in the price range. But hey, moni's are very subjective for each person, the room, the music, the ears, everything makes a difference. I guess we're just lucky?

I listened to the BM5A and 824's side by side a few months ago. My friend and I liked the Mackie's a little more when listening to a variety of different styles of music, though it was pretty close. The BM5A's were a little light on the bass end. The Mackie's being much more expensive though not to mention the size... For the price though the Dynaudios were a great buy.

A month later they got a few ADAM's in which pretty much blew the Mackie's away. They also had some 624's this time which didn't really sound like the 824's and the BM5A's were much better at about the same price.

The room wasn't the best though and the speakers were pretty close to the wall which isn't always the best thing when it comes to rear ported speakers.

The amount of low end the Mackie's put out I wouldn't even consider taking them over BM5A's in a 7 x 7 room though... That'd be overkill.

The ADAMs we just got fucking own the Mackie's. So much more clarity, probably due to the ribbon tweeters...and the low-end is still there like the 824's.

I had the 824s for a few years, I then found a great deal on a pair of Genelc 1031s ($1900 for the pair  ). I ran both sets of monitors side by side for a while, but the genelcs had better definition in the bass and better clarity in the high end. The Mackies had *more* bass, but it was smeared in comparison to the Genelcs. So, like the rest of my Mackie gear, the monitors are gone. However, I was pretty happy with them, and wouldn't have switched if I had found such a good deal.

Yeah, the old studio I was at had 1031's in every suite. I would push for a pair here, but they aren't necessary until we upgrade a few other things first. $1,900 for the pair is a great deal, since they go new for $1,600 a piece! Nice find!

Yeah, I was happy with the find. They were a new pair too. I still don't know how the company was selling them so cheap, I figured that they were a dealer that was getting out of the Genelec line, or that they had to buy a certain number of units in order to qualify for their dealership. You don't find too many deals like that on eBay anymore.
