Well I got my Blackout today, and it seems to be working good, but when I tried out recording a test DI track I was getting quite a lot of clipping, I'm not sure if its actual clipping because its so loud, or if its the internal clipping like you get with EMGs.

Here a quite and shit played sample is - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3163522/blackoutput DI full volume.wav

Is that slight clipping supposed to be there? I'm a total active pup n00b lol

I am not an active pup guy, but I would think if visually it doesnt look like the wave form is clipping in the DAW then its just internal clipping.

Yeah, well when I'm playing, in Reaper its coming up as clipping at exactly 0.0, so its just touching red, but when I render DI tracks, its coming up as rendering at -0.1 or something like that, so its a touch under clipping

I'm a bit confused about this, but it still sounds awesome haha

Lower it through Windows' settings?

edit : nevermind, as it'd still come after the interface
well you can still try it and see :/

You could also just turn down the volume on your guitar, no?

Then I'm losing the beautiful gain haha

I've got everything turned down almost as low as low as they can go.

But the clipping never goes above 0.0 in Reaper, even when I'm playing really hard...

I think that signal around 0 db means interface, not pickup, clipping.
By viewing DI it`s clear that there is digital clipping, internal clipping has different character (visually).
If interface does not have preamp gain adjustment, then there is two choices: lower pickup (don`t think it help, because it`s more suitable for internal clipping) or lower guitar level, it`s OK for active pickups (passives slightly change tone).
What is maximum input level for Line6 devices - anyone knows this?

Do you mean lower the volume using the guitars volume control?

As I found myself, lowering active pickups just reducing internal clipping, peak level stays on similar level.
It will be interesting to know what is better in this case.

Unfortunately many inexpensive interfaces have rather weak maximum input level (even with minimum gain).
It seems that for most active pickups (like EMG`s, SD AHB1) you will need something like +14.2 dbu (12 dbV) or more.
