How does one add rasp to ones voice (like.. almost screaming - Jorn Lande, or Marco Hietala)? I love the effect but haven't seen any info on how to achieve it. Is it something you're born with or somethin you can learn?

How do rasp? ¯\(°_o)/¯

Tell that to Lemmy

I would guess that Lemmy would sound like that anyway, becuse of his natural voice and the he sings! Raspy vocals are about 95% technique, and something you pretty much just have to work on and PRACTICE!

Besides, how the hell is whiskey and ciggarettes supposed to help? I'd say something like soda would work much better, adding alot of flem to your throat making it alot easier to distort your vox.

Johann from Amon Amarth drinks whiskey and eats potato chips when tracking vox. Not saying he's the same type of singer as Jorn or Marco but different people do different shit. My singer idolizes Jorn and can do that raspy yet melodic thing, his only trick is to snort water through his nostrils (which induces dry heaves in me every time I see it). Oh and about a pack of Parliaments for each session... the boy loves him some smokes

Honestly though keep in mind that both Jorn and Marco are like in their 40s I think. I would say that a large contributor to the current sound of their voices has to do with abusing those same voices for a lotta years. Same with Hansi from Blind Guardian. Of course there are things you could do to mimic it. Just sing something you would normally sing and just get yourself into a super pissed off / evil headspace. Use a little more throat instead of diaphragm ... and don't forget to cup the balls

Do you mean like a clean vocal but with a hint or a growl or a screech?

If so, just use more pressure from your diaphragm when you sing. At least, that's how I do it.
