Advice on mix

Hey guys,

Im mixing my bands demo at the moment, and need a bit of advice on the mix. This is a snippet of a track.

To explain, im trying to go for a sort of semi-processed organic sound, which im finding quite hard.

Any advice or comments would be great.

sounds pretty natural to me, although i would like to hear the guitars with alittle more upper mids. the mix gels well, but it's kinda congested for lack of a better word. maybe more space could help that. It sounds good though. good song too.
 
Cheers dude! Thanks for the comments. Do you think that kind of thing could be sorted out in mastering? Or should I be trying to use some room verbs to open it up? Cut some of the lower frequencies?

It definitely has a cool sound, for sure! The only thing is that the chugs are way too tubby and the lower passages on the guitars get kinda cloudy, so I'd cut the lower mids and crunch 'em up! Beyond that, it's a pretty sweet song, me thinks!

It's good to hear this with vocals. I think the Bass volume clouds the guitars a bit. Maybe drop that a bit and raise the guitars a tad. I was just playing around with it adding a bit of high end to the mix and some compression to squash the lows. It may not be what you are after, but it seems to add some definition, to my ears at least. Please bear in mind that I have only listened to this at LOW volume. It may sound too shrill or thin at a louder volume, I am not sure. Again, I am not trying to tell you what to do with YOUR sound but I thought the difference was interesting with some more air up top.

sounds much better. clutter in low end is no good. maybe try diff mic technique another tracking session. more "stereo" or room to get some more natural space. the overheads also seem kinda harsh and not "warm" the guitars sound great though especialyl after hearing guitar hacks "remix" with the lows more clear and less muddy

guitarhack's mix is heading in the right direction, but i think it lacks the body of your mix. I think the bass guitar is the issue that you need to fix. I'd also add some echo to the clean vox.
 
Hey guys thanks for the all feedback.

Keith: Im leaving a lot of the effects and such things till later on in the processes as I want to try and get a good overall mix on the tunes before I get side tracked, with experimenting with effects and other ideas. Im slowly bringing things in.

GuitarHack: Cheers for the comparison man. From the comments people made I had already been trying to tighten up and clear up the low end. I like the clarity in your version of it, but it lacks, as Keith says the body. It did give me a good idea of how it was sounding in comparison to mine. In a way making mine sound overly dark. I think your version was a little too bright for my likes, but with this latest mix, I think im getting closer to how i want to hear things

The low end is still clouded and tubby to my ears. The part that strikes me as being most out of place is the fact that any chugging is muddy but also much louder than any of the open note runs so they sound too thin in comparison. Although, I'd say the chugging is the thing too thick in reality.

Also, granted ears vary, but I think Guitar Hack's is right where it should be in terms of brightness overall with maybe just a tad too much brightness on this guitars which he couldn't control. Of course, every band has their take on their sound, so pay no attention to me!
 
Of course not Ice Man! I value every persons opinion greatly. I just want to get an idea of what people think about the mix. Im not 100% happy about the mix, but I just want to make sure it is powerful and clear. So if the low end is sounding flubby on other people's system, more then likely it is.

I think the sound I'm after isn't completely typical, I just want to make sure that when people hear it, they don't hear a bad mix, but maybe one which isnt completely to their taste, but can still listen to the music etc and enjoy it.

ps. if you haven't guessed, these mixes are bugging me, quite bit.

Definitely a cool song, too! Your vocalist reminds me a lot of Filter's singer mixed with the singer from Fell Silent, whom I believe are pretty close to your area. The guitars may be a smidge loud to my ears compared to the drums, at least the only thing that sticks out is the snare. For my pref, I'd like a little more kick.

Also, don't beat yourself up at all, man. Your mixes sound quality as hell and I wish mine were consistently of that caliber! Like I said, the only thing that I didn't completely enjoy was the "blum" of the palm mutes of the other song, but still, it's a badass tune and a badass mix. Could just be some low-mid compression or corrective eq. If you haven't checked already, I'd suggest listening to your stuff in a car, you'll definitely be proud as to how well it translates.

Cheers dude! Good to know people are digging the songs. I just think Im getting cabin fever, I really need to get out, and come back to these mixes. I would love to listen to the mixes in a car, but unfortunately im only 19 and cant afford one...woe is me. :lol:

This last song was my favorite in terms of mixing and the song itself. I wouldn't say the music is like Fell Silent, but some of the screams definitely give me the vibe of their singer for sure. Top notch!

WOW, I really like the songs. I think the problem in the first songs are the lack of high end in the mix. The snare seems dull. Add a little reverb to the vox. Overall its an amazing sound and mix.
 
The Guitars in "Groove" cut through the mix much better than on the other 2 songs making the overall sound much more open and upfront, nice and airy. The other songs sound muffled/blanketed/nasally in comparison. IMHO.

Constructive criticism, not an insult. :)

Maybe just personal taste though.
