AKG D112

Yeah I guess it's worth a try.

I imagine it's going to be 100x better than what I currently have:

it sure aint bad!!
i think ints a good middle between the beta 52 and d6, the beta 52 is awesome for rock kicks, great bottom end, but not much click, whereas i find the d6 is obscenely clicky, which is ace for metal. the 112 is somewhere in the middle.
i got one and i like it

The D112 is a modern classic. It's on the kicks and bass cabs of thousands of records. Never used a D6, but it has a long way to go before gaining the reputation of the D112.

Score.

This sounds like a good buy then as I do cross generes quit a bit.

It has a much 'lower' attack frequency than the Beta 52 and D6. The D6 naturally has that real high-end metal click to it. The Beta 52 is somewhere in between, with a nice sharp attack, but a roundness that lets it work for rock.

The D112 has what I call a 'beachball' attack. Where it sounds like you're bouncing a beachball on the ground. For the best example of a good D112-on-bassdrum sound listen to Nickelback's 'The Long Road'. It's a great rock kick mic, but I wouldn't be using it for metal.

i have used the beta 52 and the d6 and like said before the d6 gives you that nice kick for metal almost with no work where as the 52 you gotta kinda find that sweet spot and it take a little work. but as far as d112 i was in a studio where they used it on a bass cab and it's really nice....alot of country music uses it.

Put that fucker right up on the beater. I cut a bigger whole than usual in the outer skin, to accomadate my hand and the D112 when moving it around. It'll keep you from ripping up the outer head. When your equing, cut out all the puffy mids, and boost around 2k-4k. YOWZA!

i would choose a Sennheiser E902 in front of all the mics named. i recorded a session using the Audix D6, its a good mic, but E902 sounds better in my ears.
D112 sounds doll. i had to use alot of eq to get some heavy kick sounds. cut way back on 200-250 hz, and add much at 7000-10000 khz
